History
Brief History of Character:
Malachi was the second child born and only son to Rabastan and Alexandria in 1976. The Lestranges were an affluent and entitled family. His mother tried to instill love for art in her two children which spurred Malachi's love of art which he was naturally talented in. Their family life was relaxed though busy and scheduled and any fight their parents had were kept away from their children so that he lived in blindly that his parents' marriage was perfect. Before Hogwarts, they were given proper training in many things. He learned to speak French fluently and knows enough of Norwegian, Danish, and Dutch to be passable and be able to get around if he went for a visit. He was also educated in formal etiquette and dancing, where he was taught how to properly slow and ballroom dance. Thalia left for school two years before he did and he was jealous of his older sister for going while he remained being taught by private tutors and taking various lessons his mother had set up for her son.
Finally, in 1987, Malachi went to Hogwarts with his sister. While everyone expected him to be Sorted into Slytherin, Malachi was Sorted into Ravenclaw to his surprise. He coasted through Hogwarts, not having to worry too much about getting good marks, but somehow ending up at the top of his class. He even was made a Prefect during his fifth year to the surprise of his parents, though he didn't take the position seriously. The longer he stayed at Hogwarts the less he seemed to take anything serious and just acted like he was entitled to anything he got, including good marks and friends. During his fifth year, he finally admitted to himself that he was bisexual after dating and being with a few girls that he found attractive and still being attracted to men (he was an early "bloomer" because he didn't care). He didn't tell anyone straight-out about his sexually, but he never hid it either. It was part of who he was, and there was no need to inform anyone. Nothing had changed.
When he graduated from Hogwarts in 1994, he broke the unwritten law and attended the Royal College of Art in London, England, a muggle art school. His father adamantly opposed this decision and he used saved money he had, as well as some trusts he had access to, to pay his way. The money did not dry up, as his mother stopped her husband from taking away his access to his own money. During his time away, he kept in constant contact with his mother and they grew closer than they had before. He attended for two years, living in the dorms and hiding his magic. Just because everyone knew of wizards and witches did not mean they would accept him. It was only person he'd met in the two years he was there. He'd been seeing the man for six months, not official, but close enough that he felt the desire to be honest. The man rejected him and then told everyone he was a wzard. The news caused an alarming backfire for Malachi.
When his fellow students, even those who were once his friends, found out he was a wizard, everything changed. His roommate moved out the next day, requesting a room reassignment and informing the administration he was a wizard and threatening him. The administration granted the man's request and actually had an on-campus investigation of the accusations. Luckily for Malachi, the administration found nothing except of hearsay a few witnesses that 'saw' Malachi do something to corroborate the story. Malachi didn't even have a bad school record, acing his classes, attending them all, no reports of problems on campus as well, and on good standing with all his professors. Until they found out he was a wizard. While he was still working his hardest, and perhaps harder with the decline of his social life, he began to fail projects and classes, making his GPA drop drastically. Students hated him, ignoring him when he was in the room, looking at him when they had to like he'd grown a third head, and he even received hate mail notes and death threads shoved beneath the door of the double he now had all to himself. Nothing was the same. Slowly, Malachi, living amidst a university of muggles who feared and hated him now, began to fall into a depression. It wasn't long before he began to stop eating in the cafeteria, dropping extracurricular activities, and then skip class. He just couldn't stand being treated so poorly by people who he'd been partying with a month before. He tried to see it from their point of view, how they feared him, but he couldn't always. He knew how society portrayal magical people to muggles, and visa versa, and in his time at the college, he found that he didn't exactly agree with everything even more than his naturally rebellious personality didn't before. They were just like him. They went to school, fought with the family, argued amongst themselves, and drank and smoked pot, just like him. They were just like him. He failed to see any different between wizards and muggles besides what everyone had created in their own mind in this world. Six months after the knowledge of him being a wizard came out, he came back to his dorm after visiting some wizard friends outside of the college - those wizard friends who would still talk to him, since many of them dropped him as well, saying he was betraying their own kind by attending a muggle school any reason - and found the words "Die, Lestrange" painted in a blood red on his wall. That night, without telling anyone and simply having enough, he moved out of the dorms and into a flat with a few wizard friends. He officially dropped out of school the next day.
By the time he'd tried to go to a muggle school and failed it was 1997, and he was struggling to find his place. He'd felt he had something at the university and now that was lost. He still had money in trusts, savings, and even a few bonds, but he didn't want to live off that money without going to school. With his mother's help and prodding, he started to work as an art tutor to those in wizarding society before their child entered Hogwarts and even some he continued to tutor after their acceptance while he worked on his own art and sold his work on the street, to clients, and displayed them in galleries. His financial situation improved dramatically and he left his family money alone. After he'd settled himself in a comfortable flat in London, he was able find his place again, though he missed the college, the muggle culture he was now ostracized from, and the relaxed nature his life once was. Even after he left the school, his father refused to speak to him, disowning him formally to anyone who would listen. He felt Malachi had dishonored the Lestrange name and spit on everything he was taught as he was raised. He got many of his work displayed a local, moderate sized gallery in London, and made curator. At the gallery he still displayed his art when it was worthy, worked on his personal art on the side, taught art classes, and tutored both private and in class.
In December 1999, his mother died. They were not told why exactly, but her death was too real for Malachi. It was far worse than his six months received death threats. In fact, he longed for those days. The absence of his mother in his life was something Malachi had trouble accepting. He had a hard time doing anything. At her funeral, he and his father ignored each other completely, creating an already uncomfortable and sad even more so. Malachi just didn't have the strength to make the effort himself. His mother had been arranged for her part of the estate to be handled by her children, not her husband. It was as if she was trying to keep Malachi from being completely thrown out of the father with no hope of receiving a real inheritance.
In May 2000, Malachi got new model for one of his art classes named Lavender Brown. During the first class, she exposed herself as a witch to him which ended up in a small argument. In the end, he joined her in her yoga class and after the class, they ended up going back to his place and having sex. She left in a hurry and left Malachi questioning why. Afterward, they stuck up an arrangement between themselves to have sex after art classes and yoga classes. A month later, he stumbled upon Lavender in a park with a little boy who was that day confirmed to be the son that she never told him she had. Instead of shying away from Lavender afterward, they continued their arrangement as before with little adjustments that her having a son he never told her about interfered with. A month after that, Lavender discovered his real last name from his sister Thalia who she worked with. She revealed her last name in return.
In July 2000, he went on a date with his best friend, Ben Macnair, to see if something was beneath the surface of their friendship more than lust and being comfortable with each other. On the date, however, they decided there wasn't and Malachi ended up punching his friends' homophobic father, Walden Macnair. Later on that month, while he was going to an art class, he ended up speaking to a muggle who knew he was a wizard and ended up shooting him for it. Luckily, Lavender was on her way to class and found him, took him to St. Munglo's, and stayed with him. He was released the next day with nothing lasting besides a scar. In August 2000, Lavender was escorting someone to a gallery opening he was at all and things got personal when she said she loved him. He followed her, telling her he loved her in return in front of everyone. They left the opening together, but only for him to witness an anxiety attack where she tried to use a joint to calm down. Afterward, they made a deal that she'd try to slow down her drug use to deal with her anxiety, move in together, and actually be together officially.
In September 2000, his friend Ben comes to him to tell him that Ben's favorite dragon, Gwen, was going to be killed by the Ministry. Malachi tries to comfort his friend, but fails in the long run. A few days later, Malachi officially meets Lavender's friends Katie (who he already come to seek him out at the gallery) and Cormac (who already threatened him in owls). The night ends up well, but that was only after Cormac last his cool and hit Malachi. Later that month Lavender finds out she passed her N.E.W.T.s and can get a new, better job. Later that month, Lavender comes up to tell him that she ran into her muggle ex-boyfriend who was Truth's father.
In October 2000, Lavender and Malachi's relationship hit a rocky patch when pictures of Lavender with the muggle Prime Minister. While she said she never slept with the other man, Malachi leaves in anger to stay with his friend Ben. During his time at Ben's, Ben and Malachi spoke of the Class of the Chrysanthemum with Malachi joining. He sought out the muggle Prime Ministry to find out the truth about that night with Lavender, only to find out that Lavender was telling the truth. Upon having the truth confirmed, he decided to go back to Lavender and take the next step in their relationship. When he returned a week later, Lavender and he made up, got engaged, and Lavender revealed that she was pregnant much to Malachi's happiness.
On November 20, 2000, Lavender and Malachi got married in the British Virgin Islands to the surprise of their friends and family. In February 2000, Malachi is contacted by the Department of Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic and interviews with Department Head Molly Weasley. Just the next day, he reads in the paper that his best friend was set to Azkaban for illegally kidnapping a dragon from the sanctuary. The same month, he saw Lavender kissing her boss, Octavius Pepper. Due to the strain in their relationship since Malachi say her kissing another man, when Malachi heard that he was accepted into the Auror Training program. Lavender is not happy with the news, but she won't stop him. He visits Ben in Azkaban later that month.
